Michael Hernandez and his mother, Dorothy, started looking for a home over a year ago. He started by visiting his bank to see what he could get financed for. At the bank, a lender encouraged him to check out YNDC’s Housing Counseling Program.
“They told me it would be a good place to start,” Michael said. “They also told me that everyone they sent to the counseling program ended up being able to buy a house if they follow the program.”
Michael said he wasn’t really sure what to expect from the program, but Alex was great to work with.
“Alex was really helpful,” Michael said. “I didn’t have an email set up, just wasn’t using one. He helped me get savvy with that, and he was just a good motivator and all around a good person to work with.”
The Housing Counseling Program also helped Michael with the financial aspects of buying a home, “Alex did the financing with us to get money built up and build credit.”
Once his credit had improved, Michael started searching for a home. He found a home big enough for him, his mom, and his sons. Within three weeks, they were able to purchase the home and move in.
Even after completing the Housing Counseling Program, Michael said he still carries the information and advice with him, “I became more aware of my finances so that once I was a homeowner, you know, ‘Okay, well, I'm gonna need some reserves to take care of this house.’ It wasn't just like, ‘Oh, you got your house. Okay, bye.’ You know? Alex was a big help in getting this house.”
