The Mahoning Valley Tree Corps plants thousands of trees around Youngstown and Warren in an effort to beautify downtown and residential areas as well as provide shade.

The organization plants trees in publicly available areas such as curb strips in residential areas, city parks, and community green spaces.

“So that when you’re walking down the sidewalk, it’s not blasting sun, you’re in the shade, so that in the spring when you’re driving down the main avenues of our city, and in the neighborhoods, there are coloring, flowering trees,” said Ben Morgan, Youngstown CityScape Tree Corp Coordinator.

The tree corps is composed of the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation (YNDC), Youngstown CityScape, and Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership.

YNDC completed business improvement projects on McCartney Road with the support of Second Ward Councilman Jimmy Hughes and American Rescue Plan funding from the City of Youngstown. Improvement projects were completed at nine businesses along the McCartney Road corridor. These projects are part of ongoing East Side neighborhood stabilization efforts. Thank you to Councilman Hughes and the City of Youngstown for supporting this project!

YNDC completed business improvement projects on Market Street with the support of former Sixth Ward Councilwoman and current Council President Anita Davis and American Rescue Plan funding from the City of Youngstown. Improvement projects were completed at four businesses along the Market Street corridor. Thank you to Council President Anita Davis and the City of Youngstown for supporting this project! 

YNDC's new construction partner, Build Ohio Inc., is seeking a highly organized, experienced, and mission-driven Lead Superintendent to oversee the construction throughout the Youngstown area. 

The Lead Superintendent is responsible for the overall field execution of Build Ohio’s Youngstown construction pipeline and will provide day-to-day leadership to the Assistant Superintendent, subcontractors, vendors, and other field partners. With homes operating simultaneously at multiple stages of construction, this position requires strong production management, scheduling, communication, quality-control, and problem-solving skills.

ORCHID: To Mahoning County Land Bank Executive Director Debora Flora for her recent selection as board president of the Ohio Land Bank Association, a statewide organization representing Ohio's 71 county land banks. Flora, a former Vindicator entertainment editor, has certainly earned that statewide leadership role. She and staff at the land bank have scooped up a shovel full of advancements in her 14 years at the helm. Among them have been demolition of 2,000 blighted buildings, securing more than $12 million for development of once-decaying brownfield land and building new homes in Youngstown and other areas of the county in partnership with the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp.

Sunday was Cornersburg Beautification Initiative‘s second clean-up day.

Volunteers met at the Cornersburg Plaza Shopping Center and cleaned the lot.

They swept debris, gathered trash, and helped to beautify the area.

In partnership with Councilman Pat Kelly and the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation–the group hopes to revitalize the area piece by piece.

Local businesses will have an opportunity to explore contracts with government agencies, municipalities and other organizations during the second annual Connector event Sept. 23.

The Minority Business Assistance Center at the YBI will host the event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County.

Connector brings buyers and suppliers together to help business owners better understand procurement, the process organizations use to purchase products and services.

“Procurement is a big word for a lot of people, but really it just means doing business with an organization,” said Tanisha Wheeler, regional director of the Minority Business Assistance Center. “It’s understanding what your business needs to have aligned in order to fulfill a contract or obtain a contract.”

The event will include resource tables, a panel discussion and a breakout session featuring organizations with active bids. Business owners will be able to ask representatives about available contracts and the requirements needed to compete for them, including insurance coverage, certifications and operating standards.

Participating organizations will include Youngstown State University, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Ohio Department of Development, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp., Western Reserve Transit Authority and YSU’s APEX Accelerator.
