YNDC, with the support of the Healthy Community Partnership's (HCP) Active Transportation Team, has completed the first Where the Sidewalk Ends No More project. The first project installed new sidewalks around Homestead Park on Youngstown's southside. Additional projects are planned for spring 2026! YNDC team members Tiffany Sokol and Ian Beniston visited Chattanooga along with colleagues from Canton for All People to learn from the Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise (CNE). Multiple new construction sites were visited as CNE is currently constructing missing middle housing, which is smaller multi family housing units including duplexes, triplexes, quadplexes and other small buildings of 12 units or less.

YNDC has recently constructed five new duplexes on Glenwood Avenue and intends to construct more missing middle housing types in the future including a cottage court on Pearce Avenue.

The Mahoning County Land Bank and YNDC have completed the construction of three new homes in the City of Struthers, City of Campbell, and Village of Sebring. These projects build off ongoing work of the Land Bank and YNDC in these communities that include demolition, brownfield remediation, property acquisition, home repair, and housing counseling.

The homes all have three bedrooms, at least two bathrooms, an open concept living, kitchen, and dining area, first floor laundry room, front porch, and two-car garage. Up to $18,000 in down payment assistance may be available for eligible homebuyers through a partnership with Huntington Bank.

The new home construction is made possible by a grant award to the Mahoning County Land Bank from the Ohio Department of Development’s Welcome Home Ohio grant program. The vacant lots were assembled by the Mahoning County Land Bank. The builder for the project is Joe Koch Construction. The projects also received support from the City of Struthers, City of Campbell, and Village of Sebring.

Through the Mahoning Valley TreeCorps program, YNDC, Youngstown Cityscape, and Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership planted a total of 357 2" caliper shade trees in Youngstown and Warren neighborhoods during the fall planting season. Door-to-door outreach for street tree planting for the spring has already begun! Anyone in the Cities of Youngstown or Warren who is interested in having a tree planted in their lawn can request one by visiting our website at https://yndc.org/programs/mahoning-valley-treecorps.

YNDC has completed the planting of 85 trees around the perimeter of the former McGuffey Mall site on the east side of Youngstown. The site is currently being cleaned up and remediated by the Western Reserve Port Authority so it can be marketed for reuse. 

Hermitage is getting some help to learn about property conditions in areas of the city.

A survey is being done to collect data on major exterior code violations and document vacant structures.

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation is helping with the survey. It will look for roof deterioration, collapsing porches or foundations and peeling paint or missing siding.

As the government shut down continues past the one month mark, there's growing concern over a potential lapse in SNAP benefits.

To fill in the gap, local organizations are coming up with a game plan.

"Our United Way called together all of our agencies that we partner with throughout the year and we had a really big meeting today kind of to see where we all fit and how can we help everyone, not kind of jumping all over each other and really helping in the best way possible," Roxanne Sebest, United Way vice president said. "We fund about 40 non profits in the community, from YNDC, the Mobile Market run by Flying High, Catholic Charities, MYCAP, Direction Home which really serves the seniors, we're working with funders as well like the Wean Foundation, Community Foundation and the Youngstown Foundation. They're all at the table to see how we can try and come together," she said.

The PNC Foundation has awarded a $7,000 grant to YNDC to complete essential home repairs at no cost to low-income owner-occupied households in the Mahoning Valley.

The home repair program addresses critical deficiencies that jeopardize the immediate safety and long-term sustainability of the home which primarily include leaking roofs, non-functional furnaces and hot water tanks, plumbing leaks, and accessibility modifications, as all of these items are vital to the function, safety, and sustainability of any home. Big thanks to the PNC Foundation for the support!

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. has installed 396 doorbell cameras this year as part of its ongoing Community Safety program.

The installations, completed by YNDC team members, took place across the 2nd Ward and in designated new construction zones throughout the city. YNDC staff went door-to-door in targeted areas to install cameras for residents who chose to participate in the program.

On Wednesday, November 3, YNDC's Executive Director presented a webinar to more than 100 planning, development, banking and other professionals on the work of YNDC titled, "Relentless Incrementalism: The YNDC Approach to Neighborhood Stabilization in Youngstown, Ohio."
