On Monday, March 7, the First National Bank Community Foundation awarded YNDC with a $15,000 grant to support YNDC's housing programs including housing counseling and emergency repair.

The Housing Counseling Program empowers low- to moderate-income residents to identify and overcome barriers to homeownership, including inadequate savings, income, credit history, and understanding of the home buying process, and prepare them for future homeownership; and to provide existing low- to moderate-income homeowners with resources to maximize their limited incomes and minimize repair costs so that they can avoid foreclosure and improve their living conditions. The emergency home repair program assists low-income homeowners with emergencies such as furnace and plumbing repairs at no cost.

Many thanks to the First National Bank Community Foundation for their continued support!

When I was born, the population here was 1,200, and that included every dog, chicken and cat in the community,” Jackie Meck says with a soft chuckle.

Mr Meck is now in his 80s, and his city, Buckeye, has come a long way. A whiff of manure from nearby dairy farms still hangs over the main street, but giant new housing developments sprawl out for miles into the scrubby Arizona desert, making it one of America’s fastest-growing cities. Buckeye today has a population of 100,000, up 15-fold over the past two decades. Its planners want at least 1m.

A couple of thousand miles to the north-east is Youngstown, Ohio, a city moving in the opposite direction. “The majority of younger people who can leave do leave, whether because they want to or they feel they don’t have any opportunity here,” says Ian Beniston, a community organiser. Once a manufacturing powerhouse, Youngstown today is one of America’s fastest-shrinking cities.

Wilton was born and raised in his family home, having lived there for over 40 years. His roof was leaking so severely that he has had it tarped for the last 10 years.

By replacing Wilton’s roof, YNDC eliminated the leaks and prevented further damage to his home. “The aesthetics are crazy, like it looks really good. I just know in 30 years it’s not going to be messed up. My son could get the house in 30 years after I’m gone or something like that. It’s always going to be good,” Wilton said

Glenwood Fresh Market celebrated a soft opening Tuesday as it prepares to serve thousands in the Valley.

The nutrition incentive program offers free fresh produce to families who qualify for the program. Each family will receive $25 per household member to spend in the market.

“I have some families that are getting as much as $185 a month to spend. It’s been pretty amazing,” said Susan Payton, Glenwood Fresh Market manager.

Payton says the items are priced at wholesale prices, so they are very affordable, and the $25 per person will go a long way.

The market also has some pantry items and some bonus items that won’t count toward the monthly allotment.
