Safe Routes to School

The Safe Routes to School program is a partnership between the City of Youngstown and Youngstown City School District that seeks to encourage students to safety walk and bicycle to school through identification of barriers to active transportation and using the five Es - engineering, education, enforcement, encouragement, and evaluation.

Infrastructure projects, designed to increase safety, include installation of new sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks, and signage.  Education programming is designed to teach and practice safe behaviors while walking to school.  Activities include walking school buses, where students meet each week at a designated location to safely walk to school together, and bicycle rodeos, in which students learn the importance of wearing helmets and how to safety maneuver obstacles on a bicycle.
