The Lots of Green Parkview Avenue Community Garden was planted on June 25 and is now a vibrant community garden managed by over 20 neighborhood residents. The garden will continue to be developed over the course of the next year with the addition of fruit trees, a pavilion farm stand structure, compost bins, and flower gardens. The Sherwood and Brentwood Avenue Community Gardens are now fully operational and claimed by residents. Much work remains, but true progress is being made.
About: The Lots of Green program is an innovative program to reactivate formerly derelict and blighted vacant land as a stabilizing asset for neighborhoods. The demolition of vacant and abandoned housing units results in derelict debris-strewn lots which serve as dumping ground and further signs of neighborhood decay. This program addresses these conditions by targeting the reuse of all vacant derelict lots in focus neighborhoods. The opportunities for the reuse of vacant land are unique to each neighborhood and determined through the involvement of residents, key stakeholders and institutions, physical conditions and neighborhood assets. The comprehensive reactivation of vacant lots results in more sustainable and resilient places with a higher quality of life.
