Lots of Green 2.0

Lots of Green 2.0 - A Call for Innovation is a citywide competition that will ignite vacant land reuse projects and empower neighborhood groups to participate in neighborhood revitalization.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The City of Youngstown, Ohio is an older industrial city located in northeast Ohio. The city has experienced a massive contraction in population like few other cities in America have experienced shrinking from a peak population of 170,002 to a current population of 66,982, a sixty one percent decline in population. The collapse of the local steel economy and this massive contraction in population have scarred the city with severe physical, social, and economic challenges. These same challenges have provided the city with an opportunity to reinvent itself, as a place where negative spaces are transformed into economically productive and healthy spaces for residents. The city currently has approximately 24,000 vacant lots, many of which formerly had buildings, and over 3,500 vacant and dilapidated buildings.

LOTS OF GREEN 2.0: A CALL FOR INNOVATION
Lots of Green 2.0
is a citywide competition that will ignite vacant land reuse projects and empower neighborhood groups to participate in neighborhood revitalization. A review committee will assist YNDC in selecting the most innovative and impactful projects to support with financial and technical resources. The primary goals of the competition are to:

  • Enhance the physical, social, and economic revitalization of neighborhoods;
  • Build the capacity of neighborhood groups and grassroots organizations to implement vacant land reuse strategies;
  • Develop new and innovative ideas for the reuse of vacant land for community improvement and for the reuse of vacant land at scale (multiple lots);
  • Increase awareness of the opportunities to utilize vacant land as an asset;
  • Leverage additional financial and volunteer resources for vacant land reuse and catalyze additional revitalization projects.
